GUN OWNERS CARE® ABOUT TRADITION

Firearms ownership, hunting and target shooting are cherished traditions and unique American freedoms available to nearly all of us. Gun owners hold these traditions dear and are committed to seeing they continue for generations to come.

Here are some NSSF efforts working to ensure a bright future for our traditions:

FIRST SHOTS®

Developed by NSSF and hosted by independent shooting facilities, the First Shots program has helped introduce thousands of new participants to target shooting and firearms safety. These free seminars at local ranges across the country provide a comprehensive introduction to target shooting by qualified range operators and instructors that includes firearm safety, ownership requirements, shooting fundamentals, hands-on instruction and how and where to continue.

+ONESM Movement

A major barrier for people wanting to learn about hunting and target shooting is that basic knowledge of these pastimes is not passed down from adults to youth as commonly as it once was. That’s where programs that inspire mentoring — like NSSF's +ONE Movement — are making a huge difference. According to recent research, if just one in three hunters or target shooters introduces just one new person, it would secure a strong future for generations to come.

National Shooting Sports Month®

August is National Shooting Sports Month, a time to celebrate one of America’s great pastimes — target shooting — a safe, fun activity enjoyed by millions of people across the country, with millions more wanting to get involved. Research by NSSF shows that 24 million Americans are very interested in learning about the shooting sports, making National Shooting Sports Month the perfect time for someone to give target shooting a try. There are dozens of sports from which to choose, from hitting steel targets with handguns and rifles to breaking clay targets in the shotgun sports of trap, skeet and sporting clays.
